Shutouts for Seizures

-Ongoing-

At the beginning of every hockey season, families and friends of hockey teams are asked if they would like to pledge a donation to Shutouts for Seizures (SoS). Every time a team earns a shutout, donations are earned as well. SoS emphasizes the team aspect of hockey to celebrate not only a goalie accomplishment, but a team accomplishment as well.

Twice during each season, funds from all the teams are collected and given to Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy (CURE), the leading nongovernmental funder of epilepsy research in the United States. Your tax-deductible gift will fund critical epilepsy research and make a difference in the lives of the 3 million Americans and 65 million people worldwide touched by epilepsy. Over the last four seasons, with the Chicago Young Americans (CYA) Girls AAA Program, Shutouts for Seizures has raised over $30,000 for epilepsy and seizure awareness.

To participate, have your team's goalie sign up, and you will then be able to donate by your team name and goalie's name! For information, go to http://cureep.convio.net/goto/ShutoutsforSeizures.

Building CURE Epilepsy Globally

-Ongoing-

Building CURE Globally, "BCG", is a worldwide endeavor to raise awareness and $1,000,000 USD for neurological research in particular for epilepsy. The "BCG" event, Building CURE Globally is an acronym for my son's name, Britton Curtis Green who lives with epilepsy.

As our family has sought medical attention, medications and life style solutions for Britton's "Idiopathic Intractable" diagnosis we have met so many people with family members struggling with epilepsy. All of us want to do something big to raise awareness and money for research.

Stand Up for Epilepsy

Monday, September 5, 2016
11am

Freeport, Maine

About a year ago our middle son was diagnosed with a rare and difficult to treat form of epilepsy. Since that time epilepsy has changed our family in many ways. No one should have to go through this - a child struggling through seizures is traumatic and deeply heartbreaking. I also have to say that through it all we are closer as a family than ever because we acutely understand how precious each of us is to the other.

The boys have decided they want to hold lemonade stands this summer to help other people with seizures. They want to donate all of their proceeds towards finding a cure. They will be holding Stand Up For Epilepsy lemonade and snack stands at various locations in our town but at 25 cents a pop they need your help!

#TeamAbby
Epilepsy Awareness Day is March 26th

Wednesday, January 27, 2016 - Thursday, February 25, 2016

8 year old Abby decided that she wanted everyone in her family to wear shirts for Epilepsy Awareness Day, which sparked her family into looking how to turn that into a way to raise some money for those kids (and their mommy's and daddy's) and adults that treatments just don't work for. The ones who don't have their seizures under control.

So, if you can, please buy a shirt here to support Abby, wear it on March 26th (and any other day), and know that all the profits are going to an organization dedicated to researching to find the treatments that those kids and adults so desperately long for.

#GiveCURE this #GivingTuesday as we call attention to the alarming fact that 1 in 26 Americans will be diagnosed with epilepsy in their lifetime. At 17 months, Virginia, was diagnosed with epilepsy. Now 12 years old, she has suffered more than 12,000 seizures, despite the many daily medications she takes. Like Virginia, nearly one-third of patients' seizures are still uncontrollable. Let's show Virginia that we care by funding innovative research and not allowing promising opportunities to pass us by.

The Sacred Disease: A Memoir of Life with Epilepsy

Monday, November 9, 2015 - Thursday, December 31, 2015

"The Sacred Disease" is a memoir about my life with epilepsy. I was diagnosed with epilepsy just before she I left home to study medicine at the University of Wisconsin.  Through college, medical school, a pediatric residency, and into my adult life as a wife and a mother, I have struggled to find freedom from seizures or to live successfully despite them. Along the way, I discovered that the dueling roles offered valuable perspective about my patients and myself.

By telling my story, I hope to raise awareness about epilepsy and decrease the misunderstandings associated with seizures. 100%of the author royalties from the sale of this book will be donated to CURE.  Please consider purchasing a book to donate to an important cause and to join my voice to stop stigmatization.

Capes that CARE

Sunday, November 1, 2015 - Monday, November 30, 2015

November is the National Epilepsy Awareness Month and we're wondering how much people really know about Epilepsy.  To be honest, 5 years ago, we knew very little about it.  Today, however, we know a ton more thanks in part to our close friend Shalee and her daughter Ella. We have learned that 1 in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy in their lifetime. 200,000 people are diagnosed with it each year worldwide and for more than half of them the cause is unknown. Approximately 66% will find a way to control seizures (most frequently with side-effects) and 34% will not find a way to control them.  We found these statistics overwhelmingly unfair especially if you can imagine having seizures, now knowing why and not knowing if you'll ever find a cure for them! During the past 5 years, we also have learned that people suffering from epilepsy, whether having the condition or assisting someone who does, are truly amazing, resilient and selfless HEROES.

We also have seen that despite the lack of answers about their condition they figure out how to carry on and can live great, meaningful and happy lives, especially if they have support from family, friends and community who CARE.

In honor of epilepsy awareness month half of the proceeds from SAMIMAY purchases in November will be donated to CURE.

Pose for a CURE

Sunday, November 1, 2015 - Monday, November 30, 2015

In honor of the 65 million (yes, you read that correctly) people living their lives with Epilepsy, the Pose For A CURE fundraiser has been created. Our goal is to raise funds for CURE: Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy in addition to raising the general public's awareness of Epilepsy.

The fundraiser itself is really quite simple.

  1. Kind hearted people make a donation to CURE in the amount of their choosing using the link below.
  2. They then print out a confirmation of donation.
  3. Yoga teachers in studios from all over the US will offer a class(es) at their studio allowing anyone with a receipt of a donation to attend for free as a way of saying "Thank you".

* Yoga teachers - The class can be in your style of yoga, at your studio, any day in the month of November (which is Epilepsy Awareness Month), at any time of day. It can also be as simple as allowing donors to attend a class you already have in your weekly schedule.

Columbus Marathon
Running in memory of Jenna Parlette

Sunday, October 18, 2015
8:00 am

In October I am running my first full marathon at the Nationwide Children's Columbus Marathon. Although running this distance is a feat itself I decided to take it a step further and run for a cause. It both gives me motivation in my training as well as raises money for a great cause.

In August of 2013 my close friend and former teammate, Jenna Parlette, was running a race at Franklin College. She was leading the race with less than 100 meters to go when she collapsed before finishing and never regained consciousness. She died a few days later at 20 years young. Jenna lived with epilepsy since 6th grade and also was diagnosed with an irregular heartbeat. Despite these set backs she never backed down. She was a top runner in the Ohio Athletic Conference and record holder of the 5000 and 10,000 meters at Wilmington College.

Since then her friends and family have been trying to carry on her legacy. She was a wonderful person, an amazing runner, a dedicated student, loving daughter, and great friend and I would be honored to run in her name for such a great cause.

Violet Femmes Relay Team
Ragnar Relay Race

Saturday, October 3, 2015

Once again the Violet Femmes are running this race to raise funds for epilepsy research. We run in honor of everyone whose life has been touched by epilepsy, but especially for our teammate Alison Kukla and for Virginia Cooper, whose mom, Kate is also on the team.

It’s a 200-mile relay race from Cumberland, MD, to Washington, DC. They take two vans for 12 people and run in shifts. The team is called Violet Femmes because purple is the color of epilepsy awareness

Won’t you join me in the fight for a cure for epilepsy? Sponsor my mom’s team today by donating to CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy)and help me and millions of others who are praying for the seizures to stop.

The Toadstool Pub

Our interest in raising funds for epilepsy research started with our daughter Maggie; but this really isn’t about her. Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent, yet underfunded neurological disorders in the United States. Those living with epilepsy deal with varying degrees of significantly life altering symptoms every day.  Research has provided some patients and their families with effective medications, nutritional plans, and an enormous amount of hope.

Event starts at 6:00pm
There will be a live auction, silent auction and raffles with great prizes.

111 Minna Art Gallery

111 Minna (between 5th & 6th Streets, San Francisco)

Please join us for the 5th Annual Teresa's Birthday Benefit for CURE on Thursday, September 10 in San Francisco!

We look forward to seeing you there to celebrate a milestone year, our 5th anniversary. When we started this event to honor Teresa and celebrate her birthday we had no idea the impact we could make. Our goal this year is to raise $12,000 to bring our cumulative five-year fundraising total to $50,000!

Our event honoree, Teresa Walsh, died from SUDEP on November 23, 2010, 5 years after being diagnosed with epilepsy. During the time since Teresa's passing great strides have been made in the quest for a cure, but there is more work to be done. Your support of this event and of CURE helps to bring us closer to a day when the millions of people currently suffering from epilepsy will be seizure free.

My son Calvin was born six weeks early with significant neurological problems of unknown origin. When he turned two he was diagnosed with epilepsy, which eclipsed all other adversity he'd encountered. No drug or dietary treatment has completely controlled his seizures. I write about the challenges we encounter, and the great perspective we gain as a result. I post something several times weekly in an effort to increase epilepsy awareness, dispel the myths, promote understanding and inspire empathy, all in hope of a cure.

Pose for a CURE

Tuesday, November 4, 2014 - Thursday, November 27, 2014

Calling all yoga lovers - teachers and students!

No additional classes required. When you confirm the date and time with me at poseforacure2014@gmail.com I will post it on this page for donors to see.

That's it! Just 3 easy steps to making a difference in millions of lives!

Violet Femmes Relay Team
Ragnar Relay Race

Friday, September 12, 2014 - Saturday, September 13, 2014

Cumberland, MD to Washington, DC

One in 26 Americans will develop epilepsy during their lifetime. Ten years ago, my daughter, Virginia Cooper became one of them. Now that she’s 11, my husband Matt and I estimate that she's had more than 10,000 seizures, despite the medications she takes daily. Like Virginia, nearly half of the three million Americans with epilepsy do not have complete seizure control or only achieve seizure control at the cost of debilitating side effects from medications.

One of the ways I cope with the stress of raising a child with epilepsy is by running. I often run with friends, who often ask what they can do to help. So, I asked them to join my Ragnar team.

Ragnar is a relay race. Team members run, one at a time, day and night, each taking three turns, until the team has completed the 200-mile course. We will be running from Cumberland, Maryland, to Washington, DC, September 12-13.

We’re the Violet Femmes because purple is the color of epilepsy awareness and we’re an all-female team running to benefit CURE (Citizens United for Research in Epilepsy). Founded in 1998 by parents of epilepsy patients who were frustrated with available treatments, CURE is now the leading private funder of epilepsy research.

The Big Sur Marathon
Alison vs Charlie

Sunday, April 27, 2014
6:45am

Big Sur California, Highway One

I had never heard of epilepsy or known anyone who had it until my first seizure. My entire life changed during my freshman year of college when I was struck by a grand mal seizure. All I remember is going to sleep the night before and then waking up in the hospital. In the years since that day, not a moment has passed that epilepsy has not affected my life. It has been a journey of ups and downs, good years and better years, as I continue to learn what it means to live with epilepsy.

There is one thing I've found to decrease seizures - running. From the day I incorporated running into my routine, my seizures have drastically declined. Charlie encouraged me to sign up for the Big Sur Marathon, which we are both running in April. We're having some fun and doing a fundraising challenge - see who can raise $500 first! Thanks for your support! :-)

Faces of America 2014

Friday, April 25, 2014 - Sunday, April 27, 2014

I am participating in Face of America 2014, a 110-mile, two-day bike ride (April 25-27) from the Pentagon to Gettysburg, PA.

The purpose of this ride is to support wounded veterans as they prove to themselves that even though they carry battle scars, any goal is achievable. I am riding to support veterans with physical, external wounds, but also those veterans who have wounds that can't be seen.

For this ride, I need to raise $750. If you are interested in supporting me on this ride, visit my donation page. The money raised allows disabled veterans to ride for free. Thank you for even a small donation - every little bit helps!

Our interest in raising funds for epilepsy research started with our daughter Maggie; but this really isn’t about her.  Epilepsy is one of the most prevalent, yet underfunded neurological disorders in the United States. 2013 Concert for Epilepsy

Tuesday, December 31, 2013
7:30pm

National Building Museum
Washington D.C.

The Concert for Epilepsy was created by Chad Barth in honor of his sister, Christina Ann Sauer, who was only three months old when her seizures began. For over 26 years, she’s dealt with an array of different doctors and tolerated numerous painful procedures. But throughout the ordeal, Christina has kept a big, bright smile on her face and sustained a unique love for music.

Since 2007, the Concert for Epilepsy has grown ten-fold. Through Chad’s passion and commitment more than $230,000 has been raised for epilepsy research and advocacy, helping not only Christina, but the 3 million Americans that are afflicted by epilepsy every day.
